Family, fellow artistes and Caribbean leaders gathered at the National Academy for the Performing Arts in Port of Spain on 16th October 2026 to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Slinger Francisco, the Mighty Sparrow.

A procession through the capital preceded the state-assisted funeral, where musical performances and personal reflections honoured one of the Caribbean’s most influential voices.

Musical highlights included Chuck Gordon and David Rudder’s rendition of “Federation,” joined by Winston “Gypsy” Peters and Barbados’ Mighty Gabby. Machel Montano paid tribute with “Almighty King of Calypso,” while the musical tributes also featured Kernal Roberts, son of Lord Kitchener, and Sharlan Bailey, son of Mighty Shadow.

Minister of Culture and Community Development Michelle Benjamin reflected on Sparrow’s place in the nation’s history, recalling how his music was played daily in her home.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced plans to refurbish the Queen’s Park Savannah Grand Stand and rename it in Sparrow’s honour. Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley called for his song “Slave” to be included in the CXC curriculum.

TUCO President Ainsley King celebrated Sparrow’s artistry and the possibilities he opened for generations of calypsonians. His tribute concluded with an invitation to stand in Sparrow’s honour, drawing a standing ovation.

Family memories added a personal dimension, with Michelle Francisco recalling her father’s devotion to his children and Karen Francisco performing “My Way.”

Through music, reflection and applause, the farewell celebrated the wit, storytelling and enduring influence of the man affectionately known as Birdie.
