The Mighty Sparrow Turns 90

Today, the world celebrates the 90th birthday of Dr. Slinger Francisco, better known as The Mighty Sparrow. Born in Grenada in 1935 and raised in Trinidad, Sparrow revolutionised Calypso with his fearless lyrics, clever humour, and commanding vocals.

From hits like “Jean and Dinah” to classics like “Congo Man” and “Melda,” Sparrow’s music tackled love, politics, social injustice, and Caribbean life with unmatched style. His musical contribution earned him Calypso Monarch titiles along with national and regional honours, but to many, his greatest accolade is the eternal love of his fans who still sing his lyrics word-for-word.

As The Birdie turns 90, he remains the golden voice of Calypso and a cultural icon for Trinidad and Tobago and the entire Caribbean.
